In January 2021, I started a goal to visit all of the lighthouse in Michigan (or at least, the 130 or so in good condition). Here, you can find stories from my travels — fascinating bits of geology, information about accessibility, and (hopefully) anything you might need to know if you want to visit one of these lighthouses, too.

Why Lighthouses? Fair enough question! Partly, I love exploring Michigan, and spending time on and near the Great Lakes. And partly, I love the way lighthouses sit at the intersection of human history and deep, geologic time. If there’s a lighthouse, it’s often because something in the deep past (ex. lava rocks, glacial activity) made a potentially-dangerous waterway, and I love learning how and why. I talk about this more in my video on Eagle Harbor Lighthouse.
